Uptown Complete! from Humble Quilts

This was my first completed quilt of 2024!

I made the blocks a little smaller than Gayle's original quilt. My blocks finish at 11.5"
It is still a good size quilt that measures approx 81"x 65"

I used Pepper Cory's shot cotton for the green setting triangles and the blocks background. I love the look, but it does tend to ravel a bit if you handle the block too much.

I had a lot of cheddar solid and opted to use that on the back.

Feels good to have this one completed!

After the big snow ...

Medallion Quilts NEQM from Humble Quilts

The American Quilt Study Group had an amazing exhibit of medallion quilts at the New England Quilt Museum. I'm sharing some of them today.

From the NEQM:
AQSG members were challenged to select and study an individual “medallion-style” quilt. Each participant either chose to make a small replica or create a new quilt using the original as inspiration. The NEQM Genre Gallery features 25 of these medallion-style quilts along with photographs of the original inspiration quilts, most of which span the 19th century. Included are personal statements about what the quiltmaker learned during the process and their reflections on ...

Reproduction Fabrics Quilt Shop from Humble Quilts

One last stop on our Midwest road trip. We didn't plan it perfectly because we ended on Labor day weekend. We had to make hard choices, go to Wisconsin and hit JJ stitches and Country Sampler or Minnesota to Reproductionfabrics.com.  Margo's shop in Northfield, Minnesota was the winner hands down. I was so thrilled to be visiting! I have used her site to learn so much about historic fabrics. I recently saw her Youtube video Cottonopia

This was made with 3" stars. Don't you just love it?!

Margo gave us the pattern as soon as she ...

Fun on a Friday! from Humble Quilts

Here is another cutie Patootie little quilt! This time made by Laura in WA. (I kept her instagram handle in the photo if you want to follow!)

She opted for 7" blocks.

Then I turned this:

Into this!

We have had some beautiful summer nights.
I'm sorry for all those dealing with wildfire smoke. I hope it clears up soon. On the west coast we get it a lot and understand how miserable and ugly it can be. Take comfort in the fact it always clears up!

Thank you all so much for the Etsy orders! I appreciate it ...

Shenandoah Stars from Humble Quilts

Some of you may have seen the antique quilt I shared that I picked up in Virginia. It was a summer weight (no batting) crib size quilt. One of the trunk shows I just shared in Washington was

Glory Bee: Patriotic Quilts from my collection.

I finished my version the night before I was to leave! I LOVE it! I was so happy to debut it at the guild meetings. (more on those meetings on Monday)

Here is my version. The right side border is claret. That little surprise is so sweet!

The rail fence blocks are not all the ...

Remembering Cynthia Collier from Humble Quilts

I shared a few photos of this exhibit on Instagram but it was so incredible I need to share on my blog.
Her husband curated the exhibit and was on hand to talk about Cynthia and her quilts. It was very special.

I'm opting to share a few parts of quilts that I thought were so inspirational!

Sometimes  it is hard to know how and when to use a lovely floral border print. (at least for me!)

Secret surprises in her urns/vases/baskets.

Toile with people in the windows! Yes, please!

Another beautiful urn.

I have some of ...

Catherine’s Pin Cushion from Collector with a Needle

This is Catherine’s pin cushion from c.1855.

Her quilt, Catherine’s Garden is one of many quilts we’ve patterned and reproduced. Whenever I buy a quilt I try to gather as much as I can about the original maker - it’s special to have Catherine’s pin cushion.  My Catherine’s Garden reproduction quilt was chosen as the International Quilt Festival 2022 Signature quilt.  Quite wonderful! The pattern includes all of the hand quilting lines from the original.  I used them in my reproduction.

To celebrate, we have reduced the price of our digital pattern for our ...

Mary Witherwax Swap from Collector with a Needle

My friend Deb told me about a swap she and her stitching friends are doing.

Of course, we love that they chose Mary Witherwax blocks!

Her group has existed for years, bonded in friendship and love.

They’ve moved all over the country and still retreat together when they can.

They all do hand appliqué and don’t have too many ‘rules’ for the swap.

Having a history of many group projects they know what they like.

Their ground fabrics will all be scrappy shirtings - each member making duplicates of the same blocks.

In the end - they will each have ...

Mill Girls Quilt from Humble Quilts

When Laurie and I went to New England HERE we picked up 2 oldie fabrics- one was called Mill Girls by Judie Rothermel  and the other was The  Cocheco Mills Collection. We both are making a quilt with the fabric.
The 2 fabrics are the background of the block below. I pulled fabric for the blocks from the colors in the print from The Mill Girls.

The border fabric I purchased at Marden's on that same trip. I really wanted to use a directional print and I think it turned out better than I anticipated. I put a 6 ...

Zoom Meeting and Cascade Crossing Little Quilt from Humble Quilts

I got the little Cascade Crossing quilted and bound! I think it is as sweet as ever!

The binding is a perfect print with red and brown!

For those of you who may not have used Zoom before, would you like to have a test meeting this weekend to see how it works? If I do any short classes they will likely be on this platform.

Saturday morning 8:30AM Pacific Standard Time
Here's the link to the meeting:

Rebecca Kohler Reproduction from Humble Quilts

My friend Laurie shared her reproduction quilt with me.

It is low contrast purposely to give it an aged look. She captured it well!

The original antique is in the State Museum of PA and my friend Patty Harants worked with the museum to pattern this 1832 quilt.

You can see more HERE.

Thank you for allowing me to share your lovely quilt with Humble Quilt readers!

And here is a bit of my Instagram.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Monthly Sampler 2022 from Humble Quilts

Good morning!

Here is my monthly sampler that arrived from Two Thimbles Quilt shop (online shop now only) She carries lovely reproduction fabric which is getting harder and harder to find.
This month's sampler is cream shirtings by Marcus Bros! (click on Marcus Bros for the link)  I need to use shirtings in more of my projects. I love them!

Last night's guild meeting via Zoom went great!
Thank you to all who joined in. Zoom defintely isn't the best way to meet, but I am so glad it is an option. Pam was able to book ...

Closing out November from Humble Quilts

How is it even possible after today we have one day left in November?! It seems like we saw a lot of people decorating earlier this year. I used Thanksgiving to get a few photos with a Christmas quilt background.

My grand nephew and Elsa- cute as a bug!

My sister, brother in law and their only grandson, Zack.

My daughter, Rene,  and her boyfriend who I have not been able to see regularly. Now that salons are back open and holidays upon us she is working hard to replace all she lost when Oregon shut her down.

Sheets are ...

Potluck and Uptown from Humble Quilts

Gay Bomers at Sentimental Stitches is at it again!
She has 2 amazing BOM's coming up in 2022.
I have done many of her blocks of the month based on antique quilts she owns and I'll say she does an AMAZING and accurate job of reproducing them!

It is going to be done a little differently this time. Instead of free for a month she has a one-time fee up front and that pays for the entire quilt patterns.
I haven't heard from Gay specifically but I think people are sharing patterns and taking advantage of her ...

Jane Stickle Quilt In War Time 1868 from Humble Quilts

Someone on the facebook group, Humble Quilts- (Click HERE if you want to join) mentioned they stopped by the Bennington Museum to see Jane Stickle's sampler quilt while it was still on display.
One day I'd love to see it in person!
24 years ago (wow!) I started to make this amazing sampler with only a book that had line drawings.

As you can see I still embraced the humble quilts way, just as Jane Stickle did and many quilters before us.

This was the first and last time I made a scalloped border. I'm so glad ...

Cousins Walk Bird Sampler from Humble Quilts

TaDA! I got the center of the Cousin's Walk sample together!

Because of the bird direction I was challenged! LOL But I htink I did it as the original antique quilt.

I did contemplate setting it so all the birds were facing one direction, but I do enjoy the quirkiness of them being a bit different.

Here is the antique and as you can see I have quite a bit more to do!
If you are wondering this pattern is out of print and no longer available.

I hope your week is going great!

Thank you all so much ...

Monday Muse from Humble Quilts

Here are the last 8 birds on the Cousin's Walk Bird Sampler.  (out of print, not available any longer)

I'm machine appliqueing and doing one color at a time. I'm down to red and green.

Hubby and I took a day trip to the Yakima area to check out a hike for a possible future backpacking trip. It snowed a good part of the 3 1/2 hours there, which should have been an indication of how our day was going.

Beautiful views but hardly a tree in sight, Supposedly there is one somewhere called birdsong tree ...

Sally Post Quilt from Humble Quilts

Good Morning! My office desk is covered in 1099's, W2's, and all other assortment of end of the year paperwork that I must get completed. The joys of owning your own business!  Many people pay an accountant to do this, but was encouraged during the 1980's recession to complete them myself and I've continued that until this day.
With that said, I've done no new sewing since my Wednesday post and thought I'd share photos of my Sally Post quilt which I just took better photos of.

This is another one that Gay at ...

Swiss Cross Redeux from Humble Quilts

I've had a chance to sew, but am not ready to show it here yet, so thought I'd share this quilt from 2 years ago. I called it Swiss Cross and you can find the directions HERE

I think I need to make a few more red and white little quilts this coming year! This one is so charming!!

Have a great weekend!

Carolina Lily from Humble Quilts

Here is a Carolina Lily quilt I made in 2013. I saw it in a decorating magazine and just loved it!
But this isn't the type of quilt I'd start and finish- just too boring! LOL
So, I broke in down into small sections. I'd make 3 blocks a month so basically it would be 7 months to make the blocks, then I'd have 1 month to piece the blocks together and add a border. (or 2 months if I was distracted with other projects)  Either way I'd have a couple of months to get ...
